When to Call 9-1-1
Knowing when to use the emergency number can save lives.
When to Call
- ●Fire of any kind
- ●Crimes in progress
- ●Serious medical emergencies (chest pain, difficulty breathing, major injury)
- ●Traffic accidents with injuries
- ●Any situation involving immediate danger to life or property
When NOT to Call
- ○Power outages (Call your utility company)
- ○To ask for directions or phone numbers
- ○Noise complaints or non-emergency situations
- ○To report a crime that happened in the past with no immediate danger
- ○Animal control issues (unless it's an immediate threat)
Accidental Calls
If you accidentally dial 9-1-1, DO NOT HANG UP. Stay on the line and tell the call-taker it was an accident. If you hang up, the call-taker may have to call you back or send an officer to check on your welfare.
