When to Call 9-1-1

Knowing when to use the emergency number can save lives.

When to Call

  • Fire of any kind
  • Crimes in progress
  • Serious medical emergencies (chest pain, difficulty breathing, major injury)
  • Traffic accidents with injuries
  • Any situation involving immediate danger to life or property

When NOT to Call

  • Power outages (Call your utility company)
  • To ask for directions or phone numbers
  • Noise complaints or non-emergency situations
  • To report a crime that happened in the past with no immediate danger
  • Animal control issues (unless it's an immediate threat)

Accidental Calls

If you accidentally dial 9-1-1, DO NOT HANG UP. Stay on the line and tell the call-taker it was an accident. If you hang up, the call-taker may have to call you back or send an officer to check on your welfare.
