The Basics of 9-1-1
9-1-1 is the three-digit telephone number designated in the United States and Canada as the universal emergency number. It is intended for use in emergency situations where immediate assistance is required from police, fire, or emergency medical services.
Basic 9-1-1
Basic 9-1-1 is a system where the 9-1-1 call is routed to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). However, the call-taker does not automatically receive the caller's phone number or location information. The caller must verbally provide these details.
Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1)
Enhanced 9-1-1 is a system that automatically provides the call-taker with the caller's phone number and location information. This is critical in situations where the caller is unable to speak or doesn't know their exact location.
Next Generation 9-1-1
The transition to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) allows the 9-1-1 system to handle modern communication methods, such as text messages, photos, and videos, while improving the speed and accuracy of call routing through a secure, IP-based network.
