Rio Grande Valley 9-1-1
Cell Phone Facts & Tips
Maximize your safety when using a mobile device for 9-1-1.
GPS Accuracy
While modern smart phones have GPS, indoor locations or urban canyons can affect accuracy. Always be prepared to tell the call-taker your exact address.
Locked Phones
By law, cell phones must be able to call 9-1-1 even if they are locked or do not have an active service plan (as long as they have battery and signal).
VoIP Calls
Internet-based phone services may not automatically provide your location. Ensure your service provider has your current address on file.
Pocket Dials
Keep your phone locked when in your pocket to prevent accidental 9-1-1 calls. If you do accidentally call, stay on the line.
